Delighted to share these three recent releases during this lockdown period. All were played and recorded at Capel y Graig . Y Capel may be quiet at the moment ….but still resonating out there…

Feiolinydd yw Angharad Davies, un sydd yr un mor gartrefol wrth fyrfyfyrio ag y mae wrth gyfansoddi, gyda chatalog recordio helaeth fel aelod o amrywiaeth eang o ensembles a grwpiau. Mae hi’n arbenigwraig yn y grefft o ‘baratoi’ ei feiolín, gan ychwanegu gwrthrychau a deunyddiau ati i estyn ei phriodweddau wrth wneud sŵn. Mae ei theimladrwydd tuag at bosibiliadau sefyllfaoedd cerddorol a’r sylw y mae’n ei roi i’w siapiau a’u cyfeiriad yn golygu mai hi yw un o ffigurau mwyaf cyfareddol cerddoriaeth gyfoes. Mae wedi perfformio yn Neuadd y Frenhines Elisabeth, Promiau’r BBC, cyfres gyngherddau Music We’d Like to Hear; mae hi’n artist cyswllt yng Nghaffi Oto, yn aelod o Apartment House, Cranc a Common Objects; mae wedi bod yn artist preswyl yn Q-02 ac wedi chwarae’n fyw gyda Tony Conrad yn yr Ystafell Dyrbin yn Tate Modern. Angharad Davies is a violinist, one at ease in both improvising and composition, with a wide discography as part of varied range of ensembles and groups. She’s a specialist in the art of ‘preparing’ her violin, adding objects or materials to it to extend its sound making properties. Her sensitivity to the sonic possibilities of musical situations and attentiveness to their shape and direction make her one of contemporary music’s most fascinating figures. She’s performed at, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, BBC Proms, Music We’d Like to Hear’s concert series, is an associate artist at Cafe Oto, is a member of Apartment House, Cranc and Common Objects, been artist in residence at Q-02 , and played live with Tony Conrad in the Turbine Room at the Tate Modern. Other collaborations have featured the likes of Kazuko Hohki, Tisha Mukarji, Cat Lamb, Lina Lapelyte, Dominic Lash, Rie Nakajima, Julia Eckhardt, J.G.Thirlwell, Stefan Thut, Paul Whitty, Manfred Werder and Taku Unami and she’s released records on Absinth Records, Another Timbre, Potlatch and Confrontrecords.

Steve Beresford has been a central figure in the British and international spontaneous music scenes for over forty years, freely improvising on the piano, electronics and other things with people like Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, John Zorn and Alterations (with David Toop, Terry Day and Peter Cusack).

Beresford has an extensive discography as performer, arranger, free-improviser, composer and producer, and was awarded a Paul Hamlyn award for composer 2012.

Mae Steve Beresford yn ffigwr canolog ym myd cerddoriaeth ddigymell Prydain a thramor ers dros ddeugain mlynedd, gan fyrfyfyrio’n ddilyffethair ar y piano, electroneg a phethau eraill gyda phobl fel Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, John Zorn ac Alterations (gyda David Toop, Terry Day a Peter Cusack).
Mae gan Beresford gatalog recordio helaeth fel perfformiwr, trefnydd, byrfyfyriwr rhydd, cyfansoddwr a chynhyrchydd a derbyniodd wobr gyfansoddi Paul Hamlyn yn 2012.

Simon Reynell of Another Timbre . This is  the newest label to appear on the UK scene. Its first batch of releases appeared in autumn 2007—to considerable acclaim—and its second batch in spring 2008.  The music that Another Timbre releases is a fascinating blend of improv, eai [electro-acoustic improvisation] and modern composition, unlike that of any other current label.

Simon Reynell o Another Timbre. Dyma’r label diweddaraf i ymddangos ar sîn y DU. Rhyddhawyd ei swp cyntaf o recordiadau yn hydref 2007 – gan dderbyn clod mawr – a’i ail swp yng ngwanwyn 2008. Mae’r gerddoriaeth y mae Another Timbre yn ei rhyddhau’n gymysgedd difyr o fyrfyfyrio electroacwstig a chyfansoddi modern sy’n annhebyg i unrhyw label arall ar hyn o bryd.

CAPEL Y GRAIG  Improvisations  Toby Hay and David Ian Roberts

Recorded  2019 , released 2020

Listen to Capel y Graig Improvisations

‘It is an extraordinary space to play music. The building has a life of its own. One of the most unusual, and powerful natural reverbs I have ever heard. Listening to these recordings now makes me smile. It reminds me how important it is to play music with friends. All three recordings are completely improvised pieces, we let the space guide us as to what to play. It also features me on a beautifully out of tune, old piano.
No artificial reverb is used. The sound is the natural space.’ Toby Hay

Un o Raeadr Gwy yng nghanolbarth Cymru yw Toby Hay, ac mae’n creu cerddoriaeth offerynnol wedi’i ysbrydoli gan dirwedd, pobl a hanes yr ardal. Yn dilyn yn ôl troed y gitaryddion American Primitive a diwygwyr Gwerin Prydain, mae’n cyfansoddi cerddoriaeth ar gyfer gitâr 6 a 12 llinyn.
Wedi’i ddylanwadu gan Ragas Indiaidd, cerddoriaeth Kora Affricanaidd a cherddoriaeth hynafol y delyn Gymreig o lawysgrif Robert ap Huw, mae Toby yn creu cerddoriaeth i gyfleu awyrgylch y rhan arbennig o Gymru mae’n byw ynddo, gan ychwanegu at draddodiad hir cerddoriaeth llinyn Gymreig.
Toby Hay yw’r grym sy’n gyfrifol am Cambrian Records, label recordiau annibynnol wedi’i leoli yn Rhaeadr Gwy, Canolbarth Cymru.

From near Rhayader in Mid Wales Toby Hay makes instrumental music inspired by the landscape, people and history of the area. Following in the footsteps of the American Primitive guitarists and the British Folk revivalists he composes music for the 6 and 12 string guitar. Influenced by Indian Ragas, African Kora music and ancient Welsh harp music from the Robert ap Huw manuscript Toby makes music to capture the atmosphere of the special and under represented part of Wales where he lives, adding to the long tradition of Welsh string music.
Toby Hay is the driving force behind Cambrian Records, an independent record label based in Rhayader, Mid Wales.

Mae gan David Ian Roberts lais unigryw a’i fysedd meistrolgar ar y gitâr sydd wrth galon ei arddull. Mae’n cyfuno sain grwpiau gwerin y 60au a’r 70au gyda cherddoriaeth Indiaidd a cherddoriaeth glasurol. Er i artistiaid fel Nick Drake, John Martyn ac Elliott Smith ddylanwadu arno, mae ei ddawn gyda’r gitâr yn deillio o’i uchelgais i greu seiniau gwreiddiol a threfniannau gyda’i offeryn.
Record werin siambr fugeiliol gynnil oedd albwm cyntaf David, ‘St Clears’ (2014), yn enwog am ei drefniadau llinyn, a chafodd ei chynnwys yn Archif Genedlaethol Sgrin a Sain Cymru.

David Ian Roberts has a unique voice and virtuosic fingerstyle guitar playing at the centre of his style, He combines the sounds of 60’s and 70’s folk acts, with Indian and classical music. Whilst influenced by artists such as Nick Drake, John Martyn and Elliott Smith, his ability on the guitar is based upon an ambition to bring original sounds and arrangements from his instrument. .
David’s debut album ‘St Clears’ (2014) was an understated pastoral chamber folk record, noted for its string arrangements, and was included in the Welsh National Archive of Screen and Sound.
